Regina, SK — Following is a statement from Brian Sauvé, President of the National Police Federation, regarding the Government of Saskatchewan Throne Speech:
“In today’s throne speech to kick off the new session of the Saskatchewan Legislative Assembly, the provincial government announced a number of initiatives intended to bolster and protect a strong and growing economy.
To build on a double-digit increase to the RCMP budget that was contained in the Province’s 2021-2022 Budget, we welcome the Government of Saskatchewan’s commitment to improving public safety.
Given that our RCMP Members cover 99 percent of the geographical area of the province, we look forward to seeing additional investments to public safety and policing in the new year, as our Members and police services in general continue to be asked to do more with less.
We know that everyday routine policing duties can escalate quickly, and we need more officers who are equipped to deal with that. In short, diverting needed resources away from current police services – instead of bolstering them – is not the answer.
We are disappointed that the Throne Speech does not include a single budget increase that both we and the RCMP have asked for, as the provincial government continues to add to our Members’ growing mandate while providing no additional resources. We would like to see this addressed in Budget 2023.”
