(Fort McMurray Today) – Dumping the RCMP for a provincial police force could cost Alberta approximately $200 million more annually than what the provincial and municipal governments currently spend, according to a study released by the provincial government on Friday.
The move would also come with a $366-million price tag at least, for a transition which could take up to six years, the 100-page report by PriceWaterhouseCooper says. It adds a provincial police force could provide better service, increase the number of frontline officers and civilian specialists, including dedicated mental health nurses and social workers, lead to less transfer of officers in or out of communities and create administrative savings.
