Ottawa, ON — Following is a statement from Brian Sauvé, President of the National Police Federation, regarding the recent complaint in La Ronge, Saskatchewan.

“We have been following the recent situation in La Ronge, Saskatchewan, involving three front-line RCMP Members and a young woman seeking medical attention for her young child.

We empathize with the stress experienced by parents seeking medical care for their child. We also support thorough, open, transparent and timely investigations into complaints.

It is critically important that investigations of this kind operate without pre-supposing the outcome and are free from undue or inappropriate influence from external parties.

In this case, the individual who filed the complaint is herself facing criminal charges related to that incident, including assault, assault with a weapon, and resisting arrest, which she has publicly acknowledged committing in news stories. The officers called to the scene by the health centre had a responsibility to protect everyone at the scene of the disturbance, and we are confident in their professionalism in this regard.

Finally, we will support our Members and look forward to the outcome of the investigation.”

About the National Police Federation:

The National Police Federation (NPF) was certified to represent ~20,000 RCMP front-line Members serving across Canada and internationally in the summer of 2019. The NPF is the largest police labour relations organization in Canada; the second largest in North America and is the first independent national association to represent RCMP Members.

The NPF is focused on improving public safety in Canada by negotiating the first-ever Collective Agreement for RCMP officers, and on increasing resources, equipment, training and other supports for our Members who have been under-funded for far too long. Better resourcing and supports for the RCMP will enhance community safety and livability in the communities we serve, large and small, across Canada.
