Ottawa, ON — Following is a statement from Brian Sauvé, President of the National Police Federation, regarding the introduction of Bill C-21: An Act to amend certain Acts and to make certain consequential amendments (firearms).
“Yesterday, the federal government introduced Bill C-21, which seeks to address firearms crime. In November 2020, the National Police Federation issued a position statement on the current state of gun violence in Canada, calling on the federal government to address gun violence in a meaningful way, through better legislation, better funding, and evidence-based solutions.
The National Police Federation will continue to review the details of Bill C-21 and what it means in practice for our Members. We look forward to engaging with parliamentarians and officials in further conversations, to advance the best outcomes for public safety across Canada, as well as for our Members.
Finally, we look forward to participating, as deep subject-matter experts, during the committee review stage of the Bill.”
About the National Police Federation:
The National Police Federation (NPF) was certified to represent ~20,000 front-line RCMP Members serving across Canada and internationally in the summer of 2019, and its elected national Board of Directors confirmed in early 2020. The NPF is the largest police labour relations organization in Canada; the second largest in North America and is the first independent national association to represent RCMP Members.
The NPF is focused on improving public safety in Canada by negotiating the first-ever Collective Agreement for RCMP officers, and on increasing resources, equipment, training, and other supports for our Members who have been under-funded for far too long. Better resourcing and supports for the RCMP will enhance community safety and livability in the communities we serve, large and small, across Canada.
